WORK IS “WORSHIP”

Yes, you read it correctly – WORK IS “WORSHIP!” Man is called by God our Creator to work. This is what the creation account tells us clearly.
– “26 Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” 27 So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. 28 Then God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” – Genesis 1:26-28

What is worship? Worship, as I see it is, how we esteem a particular thing or person over and above everything else, and the place it or they occupy in our hearts. In this context, the Ten Commandments, which our LORD gave us, are a clear and unambiguous instructions about WHOM we are to worship, and HOW we are worship. WE ARE TO WORSHIP THE LORD GOD ALMIGHTY, OUR CREATOR AND OUR REDEEMER, THE LORD JESUS CHRIST ALONE, AND NO ONE ELSE, AND NOTHING ELSE. There are no two opinions on this.
– “3 “You shall have no other gods before Me. 4 “You shall not make for yourself a carved image—any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; 5 you shall not bow down to them nor serve them…” – Exodus 20:3-5a

So then, what do we mean by “WORK IS ‘WORSHIP?'” This does not mean we worship our work. It would be sin of the worst kind. Such a person would be doing the most unintelligent thing one can ever do. We are called to worship the LORD Jesus, and Him alone.
– “10 Then Jesus said to him, “Away with you, Satan! For it is written, You shall worship the LORD your God, and Him only you shall serve.’” – Matthew 4:10

What is the relationship between WORK, WORSHIP and GOD? *We are called to worship God through our work.* We are to work in such a manner that, when the LORD sees our work, the quality of it, and the integrity with which we work at it, He would be pleased to say…
– “21 His lord said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant; you were faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.’” – Matthew 25:21

The work that we do is given to us by our earthly “masters” but we must work with an attitude and an approach, as if it is the LORD Jesus Himself who has given us this work; and we will have to give an account of our work to Him. Let us not forget that it is the LORD who is the rewarder of all what we do, and not do.
– “22 Bondservants, obey in all things your masters according to the flesh, not with eyeservice, as men-pleasers, but in sincerity of heart, fearing God. 23 And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men, 24 knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance; for you serve the Lord Christ. 25 But he who does wrong will be repaid for what he has done, and there is no partiality. ​1 Masters, give your bondservants what is just and fair, knowing that you also have a Master in heaven.” – Colossians 3:22 – 4:1

Dear brothers and sisters, as we begin our work week, may we as Christians and the disciples of the LORD Jesus, work honestly, with integrity, using the time and the resources wisely and appropriately, for the glory of our LORD Jesus. May our earthly masters when they see the kind of work we do, say this – “Look, here is a Christian!” Even so the LORD help us.
