What is of utmost importance for a disciple of the LORD Jesus Christ? It is the transformation of our sinful and wicked hearts, into the likeness of our LORD and Saviour. The apostle Paul has these words for us in this context – “18 But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.” – 2 Corinthians 3:18. We are being transformed into the image of our LORD Jesus Christ, by the Spirit of God, working in and through us.
This process of transformation is visibly seen in our conduct, and through the character that is being shaped and sculpted in us. The apostle James, writing in James 3:13-18, says thus – “13 Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show by good conduct that his works are done in the meekness of wisdom.” Actions speak louder than the words – “…let him show by good conduct…”
Through verses 14-16, the apostle James expounds for us to see, the wicked and sinful character of the fallen man – “14 But if you have bitter envy and self-seeking in your hearts, do not boast and lie against the truth. 15 This wisdom does not descend from above, but is earthly, sensual, demonic. 16 For where envy and self-seeking exist, confusion and every evil thing are there.” Not a very great picture to behold. Mind you, this is about those who believe to be Christians.
Then James tells us, through verses 17-18, about the wisdom that is from above, which helps form the character of God in us, which is visible in our conduct – 17 But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy. 18 Now the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.” The thumb rule for an accurate assessment is – character of an individual is seen, in the conduct.
Such a character is formed, and becomes visible in our conduct, when we walk faithfully and obediently on the principles laid out by our LORD. May we, with all our hearts seek the LORD to help us be like our LORD Jesus Christ. The LORD will surely grant us this prayer. May our Redeemer be visible to everyone who sees us.
"So often we try to develop Christian character and conduct without taking the time to develop God-centered devotion. We try to please God without taking the time to walk with Him and develop a relationship with Him. This is impossible to do."
