Success is not merely the result of talent, but a whole lot of things, done dedicatedly and consistently, over a period of time, without losing enthusiasms, despite all the difficulties and the obstacles. Success tastes great, and rightly so. However, success should be firmly placed in our hearts, and never let it get to our heads. If it gets to our heads, it sure is the start of our downfall. Such are the effects of things going wrong.
The Bible warns us, through the words of the wise man, Solomon, to be conscious of how we are handling our life, and which direction are we moving towards, in Proverbs 11:2…
– “2 When pride comes, then comes shame; But with the humble is wisdom.”
Pride is the product of a series of wrong attitudes and decisions. Pride is a sweet palliative for a sure self-destruction. No wonder the Word of God warms us…
– “2 When pride comes, then comes shame…”
Please note the definitive tone in the above words. “When pride comes – THEN COMES SHAME – in simpler words, the downfall and the destruction of all that we have laboured to build, over a period of time. Beware the pride, which made Satan out of an angel, who was the head of all the angelic host. Beware, pride has only one way to walk – the path of self-destruction.
The counter balance for pride is humility. Humility will surely bring, benefits and blessings to the lives, which walk in its ways. Humility places its feet, firmly on the ground, despite the height of success one attains. Herein lies the formula to be successful, yet not self-destruct ourselves.
– “…But with the humble is wisdom.”
Have we read the words of James, who write for our admonition…
– “…Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” 6 Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you,” – 1 Peter 5:5-6
– “6…he gives more grace. Therefore it says, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” – James 4:6
May the LORD help us to always be humble and gain wisdom in life. May the LORD help us, never to walk the paths of self-destruction, to be certainly found on the path of pride and arrogance. Even so the LORD help us.
"The Christian Gospel is that I am so flawed that Jesus had to die for me, yet I am so loved and valued that Jesus was glad to die for me. This leads to deep humility and deep confidence at the same time. It undermines both swaggering and snivelling. I cannot feel superior to anyone, and yet I have nothing to prove to anyone. I do not think more of myself nor less of myself. Instead, I think of myself less."
