Trusting God at all times, and for all our needs, is any day better than placing our trust in man. This is a time tested principle that should form the foundation of every Christian. Many times, mistakenly we place our trust in man, his ability and in the power of a “prince” to help us.
– “8 It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in man. 9 It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in princes.” – Psalm 118:8-9
Princes and men of power have their own minds, and their very own motives in helping us, and in not helping us. They are driven not so much by our needs, but by their own benefits and ends. They may help when it suits them; and not help when it doesn’t suit them. For them, it is not us that matters most; neither our needs and not its urgency. For them, it is their position, their power and their status that matters more than anything and anyone.
– “Men of high estate are generally proud, vain-glorious, self-confident, and rash: it is better to trust in God than in them. Often they cannot deliver, and often they will not when they can. However, in the concerns of our salvation, and in matters which belong to Providence, they can do nothing.” – Adam Clarke
The Psalmist who said, “It is better to trust God than to trust….” in Psalm 118:8-9, gives us ample reasons in the very same Psalm about why we should trust God more than anyone else. Here under are a few reasons that j could glean…
1- God is good and merciful by His very nature. His goodness and mercy lasts forever. God is not a man to change colours by the hour.
– “1 Oh, give thanks to the LORD, for He is good! For His mercy endures forever.” – Psalm 118:1
2- The Psalmist says what he says about God, is out of his personal experience of God, His goodness, His grace and His mercy. He is not theorising about God. Nor is he talking out of his vibrant imaginations about God. He speaks from his personal experience.
– “5 I called on the LORD in distress; The LORD answered me and set me in a broad place.” – Psalm 118:5
3- The experience of the Psalmist about the LORD God Almighty speaks volumes about who this God is, and what is His character. The God of the Psalmist is not Someone who has nice words, but no intentions. Nay, the LORD is Someone who backs up His words with clear and tangible actions.
– “14 The LORD is my strength and song, And He has become my salvation.” – Psalm 118:14
4- The LORD God of the Bible is Someone who is very different from all the others, who claim to be gods in this world. Every day is good and every situation is a blessing because, God of all Creation is the One who goes with us. Therefore, praise and thanksgiving for the LORD, and the rejoicing in the LORD, flows out of the heart of the Psalmist, freely and spontaneously.
– “21 I will praise You, For You have answered me, And have become my salvation…23 This was the LORD’s doing; It is marvelous in our eyes. 24 This is the day the LORD has made; We will rejoice and be glad in it…28 You are my God, and I will praise You; You are my God, I will exalt You.” – Psalm 118:21,23-24,28
How is our Monday morning? What thoughts are occupying our hearts and minds about the week ahead? Let us look to the LORD, the God of the Psalmist. He is a God who truly cares for us, and our welfare. He is strong and mighty. He is Someone who ought to be the foundation of our faith, because He is most trustworthy. The LORD Jesus is to be trusted more than the strong man and the prince of this world. Even so the LORD help us.
"The psalmist knew it to be true, no doubt learned through the experience of bitter disappointments. Neither the common man or even princes among men could help the way God can help. It is better to trust Him!"
