Aspirations are nothing but our dreams for our future, and our lives. Everyone has aspirations, without any exception. Having no aspiration itself is an aspiration too, in a sense. Aspirations are driven by ambition. The stronger the ambition to achieve something, the stronger our push towards our dream, and our aspirations.
However, our ambitions ought to be hemmed in by Christian morals, ethics and principles, as laid out by our LORD, in the written Word of God. If they are not, then we would not know the difference between robbing someone, and rightfully earning something. One is bad, wrong and is a punishable crime. The other is well appreciated, and is much welcomed by everyone.
The LORD asks us, through the writing of the apostle Paul, in 1 Thessalonians 4:11-12, to consider His way of viewing human aspirations, dreams, aims, goals and ambition. What the Bible urges us is, very very important, and therefore, we have to give it a serious consideration.
– ’11 that you also aspire to lead a quiet life, to mind your own business, and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you, 12 that you may walk properly toward those who are outside, and that you may lack nothing.” – 1 Thessalonians 4:11-12
The above verses are from a larger context [1 Thessalonians 4:9-12] of “A Disciple of Christ, Living to Please His God” – which is considered, the bare minimum, and utterly reasonable, to say the least. If we call ourselves as Christians – which means, followers of the LORD Jesus Christ, then we ought to walking as He commanded us to. Don’t you think so?
Let us break these words into smaller bits, so as to appreciate, the world of wisdom, waiting to be discovered, discussed, appreciated and implemented, in the life of a disciple of the LORD Jesus. Such wisdom is one, that comes, straight from our LORD. Such wisdom is meant, to help us live a life, that is well pleasing to our LORD – who is the epitome, and the personification, of all wisdom.
– THAT YOU ALSO ASPIRE TO LEAD A QUIET LIFE
– TO MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS
– TO WORK WITH YOUR OWN HANDS
– AS WE COMMANDED YOU
– THAT YOU MAY WALK PROPERLY TOWARD THOSE WHO ARE OUTSIDE
– THAT YOU MAY LACK NOTHING
The first three points that Paul makes here, are critical for a life, that a Christian is called to.
– THAT YOU ALSO ASPIRE TO LEAD A QUIET LIFE
– TO MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS
– TO WORK WITH YOUR OWN HANDS
Let us see what we can learn from this passage, in the coming days. As for today, let us pause and ponder over what the LORD is speaking to us, this morning, through the above verses from, 1 Thessalonians 4:11-12. Even so, the LORD help us.
"1 Thessalonians 4:11 calls every believer to the quiet strength of contented faith—cultivating a peaceful spirit, minding one’s own responsibilities, and engaging in diligent, hands-on work. Following this pattern honors God, blesses others, and displays the gospel in everyday life."
