Man is a “strange creature” waking around on God’s earth. I say “strange” because, he behaves like nobody is watching, and that he will never get caught. My grandmother told a proverb about a cat, that intentionally closes its eyes, while drinking stolen milk, thinking that, by doing so, nobody will be able to see it. If not for the seriousness of the matter, it would be counted silly and stupid, for a man to behave so. Yet, we seem to be doing the same, in the broad daylight. We have raised lies, manipulation and duping people to the level of an “art” that requires great skill and knowledge, and inventing a rationale, a logic and a justification for such a behaviour. This satisfies our guilty conscience, and calms our guilt pangs.
– “5 Then the LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. 6 And the LORD was sorry that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart.” – Genesis 6:5-6
God is all-knowing and Omniscient. We cannot hide anything from Him. Every thought, and every intent, that ever crosses our hearts and minds, stands as it is, “buck naked” in the presence of God Almighty. There is no running away from God’s all-knowing eye. There is no place to hide ourselves from His all seeing eye.
– “1 O LORD, You have searched me and known me. 2 You know my sitting down and my rising up; You understand my thought afar off. 3 You comprehend my path and my lying down, And are acquainted with all my ways. 4 For there is not a word on my tongue, But behold, O LORD, You know it altogether.” – Psalm 139:1-4
Every time we lie, cheat and manipulate our way through life, we are declaring to God, who we actually are. We are displaying our true colours, and our true character, to God, and also to our fellow human beings. God of the Bible utterly hates lies, and every shade of it, whatever the justification, our depressed and sick human hearts may conceive and invent. God simply hates lies.
– “22 Lying lips are an abomination to the LORD, But those who deal truthfully are His delight.” – Proverbs 12:22
For every lie we speak, there is a cost to pay, and a consequence to reap. This is nature’s principle. This is God’s system of justice. What we sow, is what we reap.
– “7 Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. 8 For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.” – Galatians 6:7-8
May we make this prayer of David from Psalm 139, our prayer too. May we be honest and transparent before God, in seeking to live a life worthy of His glorious name.
– “23 Search me, O God, and know my heart; Try me, and know my anxieties; 24 And see if there is any wicked way in me, And lead me in the way everlasting.” – Psalms 139:23-24
Let the prayer of Job be our prayer this morning.
– “4 Does He not see my ways, And count all my steps? 5 “If I have walked with falsehood, Or if my foot has hastened to deceit, 6 Let me be weighed on honest scales, That God may know my integrity.” – Job 31:4-6
So what is our story? Are we trying to run away from God, thinking God will not know, and that He will not see? Are we employing the methods of the world, to manage our lives? Is living for God, by His ways, proving too expensive for us? Are we somehow trying walk on two boats? Where convenient, are we walking with God; and where inconvenience, are we walking on ways of the world? What is happening in our lives? May the LORD help us to live for Him.
"Because we possess an identity in an honest and trustworthy God, this task [of being honest in all our dealings] is only possible when we are grounded in the character of God. The world we live in is stained by sin. We are dishonest and fraudulent people...It may hurt to put yourself out there through honesty, but the lasting fruit will be a closer identity with God..."
