Psalm 34, written by David, is titled as “The Happiness of Those Who Trust in God!” Do we really want a great life? Then read on…David has some advice for us….
“12 Who is the man who desires life, And loves many days, that he may see good? 13 Keep your tongue from evil, And your lips from speaking deceit. 14 Depart from evil and do good; Seek peace and pursue it.” – Psalm 34:12-14
The key to happy life is the conduct mentioned in verse thirteen and fourteen is…
1- “Keep your TONGUE from EVIL”
2- “Keep your LIPS from speaking DECEIT.”
3- “DEPART from evil.”
4- “DO good.”
5- “SEEK peace and PURSUE it.” Honestly speaking, the above list is humanly IMPOSSIBLE to achieve – “…For there is no difference; 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,” – Romans 3:22b-24. The problem is our heart.
David begins the above passage in Psalm 34, at verse eleven – “11 Come, you children, listen to me; I will teach you the fear of the LORD.” – Psalm 34:11. He wants us to listen to this – the conduct, that God expects from us, as Christians, His disciples and His children, is possible only through obedience to God, and doing all that He is asking us to do, without delay, and without any dilution.
Our happiness, our safety and our security is in obeying the LORD, and not in merely reading the Bible, prayer, attending the ‘best’ Church, fasting, knowing and believing the doctrines of the Church, and any such religious things…however good they may be.
“22 So Samuel said: “Has the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, As in obeying the voice of the LORD Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, And to heed than the fat of rams. 23 For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, And stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry…” – 1 Samuel 15:22-23
May the LORD help us to obey Him in all things, wholeheartedly, and not religiously follow some set patterns.
"...the fear of the LORD, it is rooted in action, not religious feelings. “David is saying that the fear of the Lord is doing right, that is, that it involves obedience."
