The ‘Preacher’ who write Ecclesiastes, says towards the end of the book, “8 “Vanity of vanities,” says the Preacher, “All is vanity.” – Ecclesiastes 12:8. He says the same when he begins the book, “2 “Vanity of vanities,” says the Preacher; “Vanity of vanities, all is vanity.” – Ecclesiastes 1:2.
The point of view taken by the Preacher, who is considered as Solomon himself, may look like a pessimistic one. It may appear like a hopeless situation and nothing good is going to come. I think, Solomon is being realistic about life. He has done a thorough observation and analysis of life and had come to such a conclusion – “12 I, the Preacher, was king over Israel in Jerusalem. 13 And I set my heart to seek and search out by wisdom concerning all that is done under heaven…14 I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and indeed, all is vanity and grasping for the wind.” – Ecclesiastes 1:12-14
What Solomon is driving at is not some pessimistic hopelessness. Far from it, he is driving at a very important point, which he explains in Ecclesiastes 12:13 – “13 Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God and keep His commandments, For this is man’s all.”
My dear friends, brothers and sisters, the Word of God, speaking through Solomon the wise, exhorts us to fear God, and keep His commandments. For this is all that there to our lives. Herein is our good, and our blessing. May the LORD help us.
"Fear God is a call that puts us in our place, and all other fears, hopes, and admirations in their place." "From that to this [vanity to fear of God] should be every man’s pilgrimage in this world. We begin at vanity, and never know perfectly that we are vain till we come to fear God and keep his commandments."
