The refrain of the hymn “Great is Thy Faithfulness” is a deep and inspiring insight into who God is. It speaks so eloquently about God’s unfailing faithfulness towards His children. The refrain of this hymn, is more a beacon of hope, to every Christian, walking on the narrow path, than a mere part of a great hymn.
– “Great is thy faithfulness, Morning by morning new mercies I see. All I have needed thy hand hast provided; Great is thy faithfulness, Lord unto me.”
The hymn is written by Thomas O. Chisholm, born in Franklin, Kentucky in 1866. “His aim in writing was to incorporate as much Scripture as possible and to avoid flippant or sentimental themes.” according to the website, Hymnary. True to his desire, Chisholm based the refrain on Lamentations 3:21-24.
– “21 This I recall to my mind, therefore have I hope. 22 It is of the LORD’s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. 23 They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness. 24 The LORD is my portion, saith my soul; therefore will I hope in him.” – Lamentations 3:21-24
What an amazing God is the God of the Bible!!! Don’t you think so? Jeremiah, the author of Lamentations, and Thomas O. Chisholm, the author of the hymn, “Great is Thy Faithfulness” and countless others, down through the ages have, experienced God’s goodness, grace and mercy, in all its glory and fullness. The LORD God Almighty, though He is infinitely superior to us, yet He loves us with such amazing love, and shows His unfailing faithfulness towards us, even though we have proved time and again, that we are unfaithful and untrustworthy.
Thank You LORD for being ever so gracious, merciful and faithful towards us, the sinful and fallen human beings. If not for your faithfulness, grace and mercy, we should have been destroyed, long long back, by our sins and rebellion. Thank You LORD!!!
"Bad as things are, it is owing to the mercy of God that they are not worse. We should observe what makes for us, as well as what is against us. God's compassions fail not; of this we have fresh instances every morning. Portions on earth are perishing things, but God is a portion for ever. It is our duty, and will be our comfort and satisfaction, to hope and quietly to wait for the salvation of the Lord."
