Great things were started sincerely for the glory of God, and for the blessing of His people. However, over the time, such efforts got rusted, and not only lost their sheen, but also got decayed to such an extent that they have become almost the exact opposite of the reason for which it was started in the first place.
This is the tragedy of many a great institution that was started, sometimes individual church gathering, and at times, the whole denominations, have lost their moorings, and drifted in the opposite direction. One such institution is Wheaton College, with the motto, “For Christ and His Kingdom.”
Wheaton was started as a Seminary for women, on 14 December 1853, as Illinois Institute, by the Wesleyan abolitionists. The school latter came to be known as Wheaton College after its president, Jonathan Blanchard, asked the local landowner, Warren Wheaton, for land as a donation, and offering to name the school after him, and “save [his] heirs the expense of a good monument.”
Today, though one of the premier institutions in the world, it is nowhere close to what it was originally intended to be – a tool to train ‘Servants of God’ for the ministry in the Kingdom of God.
Unless care is taken, and constantly checked, anyone and anything can drift away, and become useless; and in some cases, become the opposite of what it was intended to be.
"More than once Jesus deliberately addressed certain issues that quickly diminished the number of onlookers. It was commitment that thinned the ranks."
