Forgiveness is a reflection of the spiritual law operating in our hearts, and not merely following the letter of the law. It is also one of the toughest things to do, especially if we are hurt badly. Whatever the case, we are commanded by the LORD to forgive our neighbour and our enemies.
Forgiveness that the Bible talks about is of a different and unique kind. Such forgiveness is unheard of, and unseen anywhere else. We are asked to forgive, by the LORD, whether someone asks for our forgiveness or not.
We are to forgive, no matter the hurt or the cost. What Jesus Christ, our LORD and our Redeemer had done stands as an example to emulate – “34 Then Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do….” – Luke 23:34. What Jesus spoke on the cross, sums up for us, all that the LORD desires, in regards to forgiving all those who have hurt us.
After forgiving someone, we have to let it go. The memory of the hurt may be there in our minds. However, we should not let it go beyond that. It is for our good. Our act of forgiveness may or may not lead to reconciliation. Reconciliation is entirely another process. It cannot be forced upon anyone, nor can it be demanded.
There will be times, when reconciliation is not possible. In some cases, it may take time. Whatever the space, let us forgive sincerely, and move on with our lives, if reconciliation and restoration of the relationship is difficult. This will ensure peace, and will enable us to progress with our lives.
Let us ensure that we are utterly honest with God, ourselves, and while forgiving all those who have hurt us. Let us ensure, to apologise unconditionally, for all the wrongs, we ourselves have committed. May the LORD help us to be peace-lovers and peace-makers…always.
"As long as you live on earth, you won't see the end of injustices. Yet God desires for you to let go of injustices and hold on to His grace. Only He can give you the power to forgive those who have hurt you the deepest."
