All of us, at some point or the other, must have wondered about the sun, moon, stars and the big and awesome universe we live in. As Christians, we surely must have contemplated about God’s greatness and His immense and infinite power. David, the shepherd king also wondered like any of us, about the sun, moon and stars. This is when he wrote the following words of Psalm 8.
– “3 When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained; 4 What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him?” – Psalm 8:3-4
David, when he looked at the night sky, and was awestruck, goes a step further to ask, “4 What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him?” This is a very important question to ask. If we simply stop at wondering at the beauty and the magnificence of the universe we live in, it is just half the journey…an incomplete journey…an unprofitable journey. When we ask, like David, the supplementary questions, we complete the process of our inquiry, and come to a properly balanced conclusion.
When we look at David’s response to his observation – “When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers…” – we see David asking two supplementary question, that tells us about the thrust and the thirst of his observation of the sun, moon and the stars.
1- WHEN I CONSIDER THY HEAVENS, THE WORK OF THY FINGERS…
– David was not some casual observer of the sky above his head.
– He was observing all what was visible and was asking relevant and pertinent questions.
– It tells us that David is no simpleton, who was enjoying the beauty of the night sky.
– The questions they David asked are the most important questions every man should be asking.
2- WHAT IS MAN, THAT THOU ART MINDFUL OF HIM?
– This questions that David asked, tells us that he was thinking about deep things.
– David realised that God is infinitely great, when he looked at the sun, the moon, and the stars.
– David then noted that, man on the other had is weak, finite, sinful and evil.
– The question that David asks reveals his agitation about how could a God so infinitely great and awesome would care to think about finite, fragile, fickel and fallen man?
– Oh what a question! – “What is man, that thou art mindful of him?”
3- THE SON OF MAN, THAT THOU VISITEST HIM?
– David’s observation about God doesn’t stop at God being mindful of human beings.
– He goes a step further to ask, *”What is…the son of man, that thou visitest him?”*
– Why should God so awesome in power should care to visit a tiny and insignificant man?
The relation that David draws between the beautiful and awesome night sky, and the finite man; and asks the most important question about “Why should God care about man?” is something that we all should be asking. I am sure most of us must have asked that question, at some point of time or the other. Truly, what is man – more personally, “Who am I that God Almighty should care for me, and visit me?” One can’t but be amazed at the God of the Bible, the LORD Jesus Christ, and His love for us, the finite, fragile, fickle and fallen humans.
Let us take time this morning to THINK ABOUT GOD and His greatness, when He chose to love and care for us, the fallen, rebellious and sinful humans. Let us THANK GOD for His unconditional love, grace and mercy, that bought us our forgiveness and our transformation. Even so, the LORD help us.
"...how mean and inconsiderable a thing is man, if compared with thy glorious Majesty, who art so infinite in power and wisdom, as thou hast showed in the frame of the heavens...[that You] carest for him, and conferrest such high favours upon him...that great apostate from and rebel against God, the sinful son of a sinful father, his son by likeness of disposition and manners, no less than by procreation..."
