What one has, and what one wants, is after all, a matter of how we see things. If we think, food, clothing and shelter is all that one needs, as a human beings, then, we will be the most content of all, on the face of the earth. If we think, we want this, that and more for our lives, then we will be running after a “mirage” all the days of our lives. It is a never ending race. The problem here is not the money itself. The problem is our love for it. The words of our LORD sums it up well – “You Cannot Serve God and Riches”
– “24 “No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.” – Matthew 6:24
The apostle Paul, one of the prolific writers, in the Bible, whom God used. He understood this simple logic. Paul goes on to write some of the most useful words for us, in 1 Timothy 6:6-10…
– “6 Now godliness with contentment is great gain. 7 For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. 8 And having food and clothing, with these we shall be content. 9 But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and harmful lusts which drown men in destruction and perdition. 10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.”
The underlying thought of Paul’s writing is contentment. The foundational principle Paul is teaching us is that, God who is our Creator, and now our Redeemer, knows all that we need, and therefore, He will ensure that we are properly provided for. Hence, we need not, and should not, run after money, but after God. The theme of Paul is an echo of the Shepherd and the sheep, of Psalm 23.
– “1 The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. 2 He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters.” – Psalms 23:1-2
The words that Jesus spoke sums up, all that is above…
– “31 “Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. 33 But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.” – Matthew 6:31-33
Let us know, that if we make riches and prosperity our priority, then money becomes out god, and we will use the true God, as a means to ‘acquire’ the god whom we desire. When we begin to walk that path, we become its worshippers, and its slaves. May the LORD help us to run after God, and not after money. Even so, the LORD help us.
"If God doesn't want something for me, I shouldn't want it either. Spending time in meditative prayer, getting to know God, helps align my desires with God's."
