The LORD asks a very pointed question, to the nation of Israel, in Isaiah 40:28, about 2800 years ago. Then the LORD, goes on to answer it Himself. This is a question, that was asked, when God’s people were in exile in Babylon, as a consequence of their sin and rebellion against their God. The Babylonian captivity shatters the scales covering their eyes, and opens them to see what they have brought upon themselves. They realise that, they were in a shattered situation. They had no help available, nor had any hope for help, in the future. This is when the LORD asks this question.
– “28 Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard…?” – Isaiah 40:28a
The question that the LORD asks is rhetorical. God was not expecting an answer from His people. That was not the intention of the question. The intention was to make them pause and ponder, who God is, and what He has done this far. It is a question that is asking the People of God to remember the deeds of their God from the past; and to ask themselves, why are they facing this situation. Ultimately, it is a question, to give them hope and strength, in the midst of all their sufferings.
The second part of Isaiah 40:28 is critical for our reading and understanding the question they God asks. It helps us understand who our God is.
– “28…that the everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? there is no searching of his understanding.” – Isaiah 40:28b
Let us break it down to see all what it contains.
– the everlasting God
– the LORD
– the Creator of the ends of the earth
– [the LORD] fainteth not
– [the LORD] neither is weary?
– there is no searching of his understanding
The above six traits of God, should help us get a deeper understanding of who God is, if we haven’t already. It is obvious that the People of God have forgotten their God, and also have forgotten, all what He had done for them in the past. Through this rhetorical question, and by answering it Himself, God is remind His people, who He is – the God Most High.
How about us today dear friends? Where are we this morning? What situation are we in today? What are we surrounded with, as we look forward to the day, and the week ahead? Do we see hope? Are we prepared to face the day, and the week ahead?
Whatever may be our situation, let us know this morning that, the LORD God Almighty, the Omniscient, Omnipotent and Omnipresent God is willing to walk with us. He has always cared for us in the past; and He will certainly do so, in the future too. All what He asks of us is, to trust Him, and to obey Him? It is when we don’t trust God, and disobey Him, that we heap upon ourselves the problems. Sometimes, like in the case of Job, and the many a prophet of God, it was the purposes of God that brought trials and testings to them.
Whatever the reason for our storms and struggles, let us bring to our mind, all what God done for us in the past. This will bring both comfort for the present, and a hope for the future. Why wait? Let us bring to our remembrance, all what God had done in our lives, and thank Him for the same, even right now.
"Hast thou not known? - This is the language of the prophet reproving them [the People of God in Babylonian exile] for complaining of being forsaken [by YAHWEH,] and assuring them that God was faithful to [all] his promises. This argument of the prophet...is to induce them to put confidence in God, and to believe that he was able and willing to deliver them."
