The created universe seeks day after day to praise its Creator. Their praise is an act of recognising the Creator of the whole universe as God Almighty. Their praise is an act of worship to that God Almighty.
– “1 The heavens declare the glory of God; And the firmament shows His handiwork. 2 Day unto day utters speech, And night unto night reveals knowledge. 3 There is no speech nor language Where their voice is not heard. 4 Their line has gone out through all the earth, And their words to the end of the world…” – Psalm 19:1-4a
Let us read the above words once again, slowly. Let us read them with focus on knowing the meaning and the purpose of those words. They speak volumes to us.
– The heavens DECLARE the glory of God.
– The firmament SHOWS His handiwork.
– Day unto day UTTERS speech.
– Night unto night REVEALS knowledge.
– There is no speech nor language Where their VOICE is not HEARD.
– Their line has GONE OUT through all the earth, And their WORDS to the END of the WORLD…
What can we learn from the above words? Is there anything that we should as human beings learn from the inanimate sun, moon stars and the skies? I guess there is a whole lot of things to learn.
1- GOD IS REVEALED IN AND THROUGH THE UNIVERSE
The universe is witnessing to the existence of God. It testifies loudly and clearly that God is the one who created it. This is what one would conclude when we look at the sun, moon stars and the skies – for sure there is a Creator God. Anyone with even an iota of intelligence, cannot but come to such a conclusion. If anyone comes to any other conclusion, then he is undoubtedly a “fool” for sure.
– “1 The fool has said in his heart, “There is no God.”…” – Psalm 14:1a
2- GOD’S MAGNIFICENCE IS REVEALED IN AND THROUGH THE UNIVERSE
When we look at everything around us in the universe, we see the “handiwork” of God. God’s indelible signature is clearly and unambiguously revealed for all to see in the universe around us. Only a blind man cannot see it…only a fool cannot see it.
– “1 The heavens declare…And the firmament shows His handiwork. 2 Day unto day utters speech, And night unto night reveals knowledge. 3 There is no speech nor language Where their voice is not heard. 4 Their line has gone out through all the earth, And their words to the end of the world…” – Psalm 19:1-4a
3- THE UNIVERSE CALLS US TO WORSHIP THIS GOD
All the knowledge that man has come to acquire over these many years of study, should lead one to fall on our knees, and bow down in awe and worship of this great and mighty God – the One who created everything that is visible and invisible. To what use is our knowledge of the universe if it doesn’t help us to stand in awe of the Creator? To what use is our knowledge of the universe if it doesn’t prod us to fall on our knees and worship our Creator?
– “1 I will bless the LORD at all times: his praise shall continually be in my mouth. 2 My soul shall make her boast in the LORD: the humble shall hear thereof, and be glad. 3 O magnify the LORD with me, and let us exalt his name together.” – Psalm 34:13
Here under are a few more Bible verses for us to gain a deeper insight, understanding and appreciation of our God, the Creator of the whole universe.
– “6 The heavens declare His righteousness, And all the peoples see His glory.” – Psalm 97:6
– “20 For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse,” – Romans 120
– *”3 When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, The moon and the stars, which You have ordained, 4 What is man that You are mindful of him, And the son of man that You visit him?” – Psalm 8:3-4
– “16 For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him.” – Colossians 1:16
What about us this morning? What comes to our minds, when we look around and see the sun, the moon, the stars and the sky? Do we stand in awe of our God? When we look around the nature, do we shout out a song of worship to God? Do words of praise and thanks flow from our lips? May we be among those who “…declare the praise of Him who hath called us out of darkness into His marvellous light…” – 1 Peter 2:9-10. Even so, the LORD help us.
"The heavens so declare the glory of God, and proclaim his wisdom, power, and goodness, that all ungodly men are left without excuse. They speak themselves to be works of God's hands; for they must have a Creator who is eternal, infinitely wise, powerful, and good."
