Knowledge of who our God is, for a Christian, is an essential knowledge for our spiritual growth as a disciple of the LORD Jesus. Many times one may be a sincere follower of the LORD Jesus, for many years already, but we may not be knowing who our God is, in a proper sense.
Why is it important for us to properly know who our God is? That is a legitimate question.
– Firstly, if one claims to be a follower and the disciple of the LORD Jesus, yet we don’t know the Person of the LORD Jesus, then our faith would be shaky, if not questionable altogether. Hence it is essential for every disciple of the LORD Jesus, to know Him and keep on at it, in increasing our knowledge of the LORD.
– Secondly, our faith in the LORD Jesus grows stronger, and our trust in Him becomes firmer, only when we get to know who our God truly is. There will be times as we walk on the Narrow Path, times of darkness, times of thunder storms and times of uncertainty. When such time overshadow us, and overwhelm us, it is then we would realise, the value of the knowledge of the LORD Jesus. Such knowledge would steady us in the storm. Such knowledge would keep us safe from doubts and disturbances. Such knowledge would help sail us through the storms.
David understood this principle very well. This is precisely the reason why he penned these words in Psalm 9.
– “10 And they that know thy name will put their trust in thee: for thou, LORD, hast not forsaken them that seek thee.” – Psalm 9:10
What comfort and what strength our hearts and minds would gain, by merely knowing that the LORD does not forsake anyone who seeks Him, and places their trust in God. What peace would flood the troubled heart! What joy would fill a disturbed mind!
– “In biblical times, a name was more than just a label; it represented the character and essence of a person. Knowing God’s name implies an intimate understanding of His nature and attributes…This knowledge of God’s character fosters trust and reliance on Him. The name of God is a strong tower (Proverbs 18:10), providing safety and security to those who understand and call upon it.” – Berean Study Bible Notes
Let us look at few more Scripture portions from the Bible to see what happens to all who place their trust in the LORD Jesus.
– “10 The name of the LORD is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are safe.” – Proverbs 18:10
– “7 But blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD, whose confidence is in Him.” – Jeremiah 17:7
– “3 You will keep in perfect peace the steadfast of mind, because he trusts in You. 4 Trust in the LORD forever, because GOD the LORD is the Rock eternal.” – Isaiah 26:3-4
– “7 The LORD is good, a stronghold in the day of distress; He cares for those who trust in Him.” – Nahum 1:7
If we have to speak honestly, our “LORD is THE ONLY AVAILABLE HOPE” and “DO WE KNOW HIM?” is a question worth asking a billion times. So, “How are we placed this morning?” Do we know our God? Do we know how He thinks? Do we know what He is expecting from us? Do we know Him personally? Let us ask ourselves this morning, these probing questions, to see where do we stand in our knowledge about God. May we sincerely answer them, and seek the LORD to help us know him more and more. Even so the LORD help us.
"Those who know him to be a God of truth and faithfulness, will rejoice in his word of promise, and rest upon that. Those who know him to be an everlasting Father, will trust him with their souls as their main care, and trust in him at all times, even to the end; and by constant care seek to approve themselves to him in the whole course of their lives. Who is there that would not seek him, who never hath forsaken those that seek Him?"
