Why do we say, “I believe in God?” Why do we place our trust in God? What are the reasons that compel us to have faith in God? What are our reasons? What are my reasons to place my faith in the LORD Jesus Christ?
Many people trust God for many different reasons. Many Christians come to believe in God because their needs are taken care of. Is this wrong? If we can arrive at the reasons for our faith in God, we would be able to assess if what we call our faith is truly faith, or is it mere using of god for our needs and necessities?
Sons of Korah, who wrote Psalm 48, have some clear words for us about why they trust God. I am sure it will help us gain a deeper insight into this whole idea of trust and faith in God.
– “14 For this God is our God for ever and ever: he will be our guide even unto death.” – Psalm 48:14
The sons of Korah conclude Psalm 48 with a two point affirmation. The first affirmation is that, “THIS GOD” YAHWEH, the ANCIENT of DAYS is “THEIR GOD FOR EVER AND EVER.”
– It requires a lot of conviction to arrive at that conclusion.
– It demonstrates the level of faith and trust they have in YAHWEH.
– It indicates in clear and unmistakable terms that there is no confusion or ambiguity in their faith and trust.
The second affirmation that the sons of Korah make is this, “…he will be our guide even unto death.”
– YAHWEH, who is their God for ever and ever is also “THEIR GUIDE EVEN UNTO THEIR DEATH.”
– The word death tells us the kind of trust or the level of their trust in YAHWEH.
– In one sense it means, they will trust YAHWEH till the end of their lives.
– In another sense it may also means that, *even if it requires us to die because of our faith in YAHWEH, we will be happy to trust Him, for He is utterly trustworthy.*
Why are sons of Korah willing to trust YAHWEH so fully and so completely? The faith that they are taking about speaks about who this God is. Our faith in the LORD Jesus speaks more about the character of our God, because of which we have come to trust Him so completely. It is not the benefits, it is not the blessings, it is not the provision, it is not the protection…it not anything on those lines that made the sons of Korah to place their total faith in YAHWEH, the God of the Bible. It is the nature and the character of God, the person that He is, the character that YAHWEH has demonstrated this far, and will continue to do so for ever and ever, even unto the death of the sins of Korah, which made them trust God.
– “9 And it shall be said in that day, Lo, this is our God; we have waited for him, and he will save us: this is the LORD; we have waited for him, we will be glad and rejoice in his salvation.” – Isaiah 25:9
– “22 For the LORD is our judge, the LORD is our lawgiver, the LORD is our king; he will save us.” – Isaiah 33:22
– “10 Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.” – Isaiah 41:10
– “3 Hearken unto me, O house of Jacob, and all the remnant of the house of Israel, which are borne by me from the belly, which are carried from the womb: 4 And even to your old age I am he; and even to hoar hairs will I carry you: I have made, and I will bear; even I will carry, and will deliver you.” – Isaiah 46:3-4
– “11 And the LORD shall guide thee continually, and satisfy thy soul in drought, and make fat thy bones: and thou shalt be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water, whose waters fail not.” – Isaiah 58:11
– “8 And the LORD, he it is that doth go before thee; he will be with thee, he will not fail thee, neither forsake thee: fear not, neither be dismayed.” – Deuteronomy 31:8
Let us learn to trust God the same way as the sons of Korah. To come to such a surrendered faith in God, requires deep and wide understanding about God, who He is and what is His nature, His personality and His unchanging character. Only when we gain such deep understanding about our God, can we demonstrate such total trust in the LORD Jesus, our God for ever and ever. May the LORD Jesus help us to know him deeply, and trust Him with all our hearts. Even so, the LORD help us.
"[The sons of Korah are inviting the] believers to rest in a God who is personally ours, eternally faithful, actively guiding, and unfailingly present right through the valley of death. The city on the hill may symbolize strength, but the real fortress is the Lord Himself—our God forever and ever."
