The Gospels record some very interesting conversations that Jesus had with all kinds of people. In Mark 10 we find a rich young ruler asking Jesus about eternal life – “17 And when he was gone forth into the way, there came one running, and kneeled to him, and asked him, Good Master, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life?” – Mark 10:17
The response of our Saviour was shocking to the rich young ruler, and is still relevant to us, even today in 2023. “21 Then Jesus beholding him loved him, and said unto him, One thing thou lackest: go thy way, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, take up the cross, and follow me.” – Mark 10:21
We see the rich young ruler crestfallen and sad at what the LORD had asked him to do – “22 And he was sad at that saying, and went away grieved: for he had great possessions.” – Mark 10:22
Therefore, we see the LORD Jesus concluding – “23 And Jesus looked round about, and saith unto his disciples, “How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God!” – Mark 10:23
What the LORD says about riches, is not so much about money and possession, as much as it is about our heart, and our love for money, riches and our faith in its power, to stand good with us, at all times. Herein is the problem – the love of money and our dependency on it, instead of loving and depending upon the LORD. Apostle Paul expounds this thought to the young Timothy – “10 For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.” – 1 Timothy 6:10
Jesus draws the parallel between the love for our LORD, and our love for riches – “24 No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.” – Matthew 6:24. May the LORD help us.
"Money exerts a certain control over us because it seems to hold out so much (false) promise of happiness. It whispers with great force, "Think and act so as to get into a position to enjoy my benefits." This may include stealing, borrowing, or working. Money promises happiness, and we serve it by believing the promise and walking by that faith."
