History stands record for times, when the word given by a person, was respected and honoured, without any hesitation or malicious intent. Between two honest and honourable men, one doesn’t need to sign any papers, nor any contracts. Integrity of the promised word is the foundational principle on which such a stand is taken. The word given is honoured at all times.
We see one such incident commented by Voltaire, a French Enlightenment writer, historian, and a philosopher famous for his wit – “On 23rd June 1683, English Quaker William Penn, an advocate of peace and religious tolerance, signs a treaty with the American Indians of Pennsylvania.” Voltaire comments “the agreement was the only treaty never sworn to, and never broken.”
The Bible speaks about honouring our word in “37 But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil.”
“5 But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him.”
“4…He that sweareth to his own hurt, and changeth not.” – Matthew 5:37, 1 John 2:5, Psalms 15:4.
Let us, as the disciples of the LORD, as His ambassadors, be men and women of integrity. Let us honour our word as the children of God, just like our Father.
"19 God is not a man, that He should lie, Nor a son of man, that He should repent. Has He said, and will He not do? Or has He spoken, and will He not make it good?"
