The ‘Purpose of Life’ is an important indicator of our hearts, its desires, and the general direction of our lives. We are ‘gifted’ a life, which has an immense potential to do so many different things. What we wish to do with our lives, is a good place to start, to know our innermost intentions and motives for what we actually do with our lives.
Today, 25 September, in 1879, Dr. Clara Swain, a missionary doctor to India, after a lengthy stay in America to recuperate from the effects of exhaustion, sails from the United States to return to her medical work in India.
Dr. Swain is called the “pioneer woman physician in India,” and also the “first fully accredited woman physician ever sent out by any missionary society into any part of the non-Christian world”.
How wonderful and heart-warming it is know that, this doctor left a life of comfort and progress, to serve the poor and the needy in a far off land, with no basic facilities, which she is accustomed to live with. Not to mention, the climate, culture, language and innumerable hardships, including health hazards. WHAT motivated this lady doctor to leave all that life, and come serve in India? WHY did she do it?
The answer, that I can gather from her life is that, she love her Creator and Redeemer more than herself and her desires and dreams she had of her life, and that she loved her ‘neighbour’ though thousands of miles away, as herself – Matthew 22:37-40.
Where are such pioneers whose sole priority was pleasing their LORD, and preaching the gospel, in obedience to the call of the Saviour? – Matthew 28:18-20.
"Missionary zeal does not grow out of intellectual beliefs, nor out of theological arguments, but out of love."
