Helping those is need is very much a Christian principle. The Word of God commands and encourages us to be helpful to those in need. The LORD Himself is kind, generous and merciful to the needy soul – “1 O LORD, You are my God. I will exalt You, I will praise Your name, For You have done wonderful things; Your counsels of old are faithfulness and truth…4 For You have been a strength to the poor, A strength to the needy in his distress, A refuge from the storm, A shade from the heat; For the blast of the terrible ones is as a storm against the wall.” – Isaiah 25:1, 4.
The LORD, urges us to be kind, generous, helpful and merciful towards those who are in need. “16 But do not forget to do good and to share, for with such sacrifices God is well pleased.” – Hebrews 13:16
Today, 20 October, in 1842, 27-year-old Grace Darling dies of tuberculosis, in Northumberland, England. What is so special about this young lady? There is a lot to talk about this young lady. She is a fine example of someone who utterly disregarded her personal safety, to help and save those who were fighting between life and sure death, if not helped.
Grace is the daughter of William Darling, who was a lighthouse operator. When she was 23, there was a shipwreck close to their lighthouse. She convinced her, much experienced father, to risk the strong winds, a stormy sea and terrifying waves, to rescue nine shipwrecked women and children, who were abandoned by sailors. They did save them.
What Grace and her father William did is a selfless act of great courage, compelled by a deep conviction to do something about those in need, even to the point to risking their very lives, rather than to sit by the side, and do nothing, because it was too risky and hopeless situation.
Monday who heard about this courageous and daring young lady wanted to marry her. Some have even raise a huge sum of £700 as a token of appreciation for her courage. Grace was not only courageous, but also, sensible person. She refused the offer of appreciation and the offers of marriage. She chose to stay put on the ground, than let this “fame” go to her head.
May the LORD help us to walk such a path. May the LORD help raise many more such wonderful people, who would choose to serve those I’m need selflessly.
"What does love look like? It has the hands to help others. It has the feet to hasten to the poor and needy. It has eyes to see misery and want. It has the ears to hear the sighs and sorrows of men. That is what love looks like."
