The LORD Jesus, speaking to the crowds of people says in Matthew 12:34b, that…
– “34…For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.” – Matthew 12:34b
The words that Jesus spoke in the above verse are profound. We should pay careful attention to them. There is so much to learn. Berean Study Bible Notes, commenting on Matthew 12:34b observes the following, which is very important for us as Christians to grasp.
– “For out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks…underscores the principle that speech is a direct indicator of one’s inner spiritual condition. The “overflow” suggests abundance, indicating that what fills the heart will naturally spill over into one’s words.” – Berean Study Bible Notes
Now, we need to ask ourselves honestly the following question. They help us in our walk with the LORD…
1- “What is our heart filled with?”
2- “What are we desiring with all our hearts?”
3- “What is it that we are seeking the LORD for?”
4- “What is the essence of all our prayers and requests to God?”
All the above four questions are related to each other. They four, in unison, point towards the heart of a Christian, and what are we wanting desperately. Now, what are we wanting from the LORD? What is our prayer to the LORD Jesus?
Let us look at some prayers of God fearing people from the Bible, before we answer the above questions.
David prays…
– “11 Teach me thy way, O LORD; I will walk in thy truth: unite my heart to fear thy name.” – Psalm 86:11
– “8 Cause me to hear Your lovingkindness in the morning, For in You do I trust; Cause me to know the way in which I should walk, For I lift up my soul to You.” – Psalm 143:8
– “10 Teach me to do Your will, For You are my God; Your Spirit is good. Lead me in the land of uprightness.” – Psalm 143:10
– “4 Show me Your ways, O LORD; Teach me Your paths. 5 Lead me in Your truth and teach me, For You are the God of my salvation; On You I wait all the day.” – Psalm 25:4-5
Moses prays…
– “13 Now therefore, I pray, if I have found grace in Your sight, show me now Your way, that I may know You and that I may find grace in Your sight. And consider that this nation is Your people.” – Exodus 33:13
Anonymous Person, most likely David…
– “33 Teach me, O LORD, the way of Your statutes, And I shall keep it to the end. 34 Give me understanding, and I shall keep Your law; Indeed, I shall observe it with my whole heart. 35 Make me walk in the path of Your commandments, For I delight in it. 36 Incline my heart to Your testimonies, And not to covetousness. 37 Turn away my eyes from looking at worthless things, And revive me in Your way. 38 Establish Your word to Your servant, Who is devoted to fearing You…40 Behold, I long for Your precepts; Revive me in Your righteousness.” – Psalm 119:33-38,40
All the above prayers, and many many more like them in the Bible, seek only one thing – that God would help them know His ways, and that God would grant them grace to walk in them, faithfully and obediently. This should be at the core of our hearts. This should be what must drive our lives. This should be what defines us, as Christians, as disciple of the LORD, and as His ambassadors.

What is our prayer this morning?
"To follow God means to lose everything we think is valuable in this life and learn the hard truth that God is everything we ever need. Following God means He will ask us to give up our personal will, desires, goals, ambitions and surrender them to God. To pray, “Teach me your ways, O LORD” means to pray “what is your will, desire, goal, and ambition for my life, LORD?"
