Each one of us, wants God the Almighty to stand with us, and strengthen us. Who does not want God to be on their side? The reason for such a desire and prayer is because, God is almighty, and who can fight against Him? If such a God is with us, then who will come to fight against us, and withstand Him, to defeat us? It surely is a good desire, undoubtedly. However, what does the Bible say on this important subject? We should get a full picture of this matter, to gain a fuller and clearer understanding on this matter – of God standing with us.
The apostle Paul, writing to young Timothy, exhorts him, with the following words, which help us gain an understanding of why the LORD wants to stand with us.
– “16 At my first defense no one stood with me, but all forsook me. May it not be charged against them. 17 But the Lord stood with me and strengthened me, so that the message might be preached fully through me, and that all the Gentiles might hear. Also I was delivered out of the mouth of the lion. 18 And the Lord will deliver me from every evil work and preserve me for His heavenly kingdom. To Him be glory forever and ever. Amen!” – 2 Timothy 4:16-18
A cursory read of the passage above, tells us clearly that, the LORD is faithful and trustworthy. He helps us, protects us, and saves us, from all kinds of things, that may trouble us. He helps us, even though, no one would stand with us, to help. However, is that all that is there in the passage? Herein is the key to a fuller, clearer and balanced understanding about God, being beside us.
– “…so that the message might be preached fully through me…”
– “…that all the Gentiles might hear.”
– “…[God preserved me from all trouble] for [the work of] His heavenly kingdom.”
– “To Him be glory forever and ever.”
The purposes of God take precedence over everything else. God is working on a great big project called, “The Rescue and the Redemption of the fallen human kind.” In this process, God wills to use us, those of us who are rescued, to further rescue those who ought to be rescued. Therefore, it is imperative upon us, not to be narrow minded, and short-sighted, in our understanding. Rather, let us willingly and gladly, yield ourselves to the LORD, so that He can greatly use us, for His eternal purposes and for the redemption of sinners…above all else, for His glory. Even so the LORD help us.
"God has plans...for each of us in our own generation, plans which He has “prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them” (Eph. 2:10). Our great concern and frequent prayer should be for God to fulfill his plans for our life. What a tragedy it would be to discover at the judgment seat of Christ that we had not fulfilled His purposes for our lives but our own."
