Whenever one goes to an important person, we usually go with gifts. This practice is amplified many times, when we are going to see a person whom we love and respect. Such a practice is seen all across the globe, and in all cultures. Such a practice is not out of fear, but is out of love and respect for the person.
What shall we take to God our LORD and Redeemer? What would the LORD like? The same question is asked by the prophet Micah, in Micah 6:6-8.
– “6 With what shall I come before the LORD, And bow myself before the High God? Shall I come before Him with burnt offerings, With calves a year old? 7 Will the LORD be pleased with thousands of rams, Ten thousand rivers of oil? Shall I give my firstborn for my transgression, The fruit of my body for the sin of my soul? 8 He has shown you, O man, what is good; And what does the LORD require of you But to do justly, To love mercy, And to walk humbly with your God?” – Micah 6:6-8
Let us break it down for our meditation. Micah begins with a question in verse 6, and then goes on to list options available, and that which people often use, to please and appease God. Lastly the prophet Micah answer his question, by declaring what the LORD God Almighty wants from us.
THE QUESTION
– “6 With what shall I come before the LORD, And bow myself before the High God?
THE OPTIONS AVAILABLE…PRACTICED BY MANY
ANIMAL SACRIFICES
– “…Shall I come before Him with burnt offerings, With calves a year old? 7 Will the LORD be pleased with thousands of rams, Ten thousand rivers of oil?”
HUMAN SACRIFICES
– “Shall I give my firstborn for my transgression, The fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?”
THE ANSWER
– “8 He has shown you, O man, what is good; And what does the LORD require of you But to do justly, To love mercy, And to walk humbly with your God?”
All other sacrifices are of no worth, and are meaningless. Therefore, the LORD is not interested in them. The LORD is keen about our hearts, and that is what He truly desires. Secondly, the LORD wants to see us think, speak and behave like Him “…to do justly, To love mercy, And to walk humbly…”
How about us? With what offerings are we coming to God? What are will willing to give to the LORD God Almighty? Do those gifts have any worth in the eyes of the LORD? Would the LORD accept our offerings? Is the LORD speaking to us today, through the prophet Micah? Is justice, mercy and humility part of our personality? Are we practicing justice, mercy and humility in our lives? Do people see justice, mercy and humility being practiced in our words and deeds? Let us be doers, and not just listeners – James 1:22-25. Even so the LORD help us.
"What I [God] require of you isn’t complicated. Simply do three things.” Do justly: “Act in a just, fair way towards others. Treat them as you would want to be treated.” Love mercy: “Don’t just show mercy, but love to show it. Give others the same measure of mercy you want to receive from Me.” Walk humbly with your God: “Remember who I am – your God. If you keep that in mind, you will walk humbly before Me."
