Most of us, we approach Good Friday with a deep feelings of pain and anguish for the sufferings that the LORD Jesus had to undergo. Yes, it is certainly true, the LORD Jesus intensely suffered all through His life. However, the LORD wants us not to miss the point, but to ponder upon the most important point for all His sufferings.
– “27 And a great multitude of the people followed Him, and women who also mourned and lamented Him. 28 But Jesus, turning to them, said, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for Me, but weep for yourselves and for your children.” – Luke 23:27-28
The Bible tells us in plain, clear and unambiguous words that, the sufferings that the LORD Jesus had to endure is because of our sins.
– “5 But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, And by His stripes we are healed. 6 All we like sheep have gone astray; We have turned, every one, to his own way; And the LORD has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.” – Isaiah 53:5-6
We have sinned. We fell from the grace of God. The beautiful relationship between God and us is broken because of our sin and our rebellion. Now, we are unable to restore the broken relationship. We are unable to help ourselves. Nor are we unable to do anything about the consequences of our sin and our rebellion, which is eternal separation with God, and our eternal death in the fires of hell.
– “23 For the wages of sin is death…” – Romans 6:23
The LORD God Almighty, our Creator, who does not want any of us to perish, has willingly chose to be our Redeemer. Being the Redeemer required the LORD Jesus to intensely suffer and pay the ultimate price of a sinless offering of His life. He chose to die instead of us. He chose to die in our place. The cross that we see, and the intense sufferings that we feel for, were a choice made by the LORD Jesus, because He loved us. By His redeeming sacrifice we have life, the life eternal.
– “3…Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures,” – 1 Corinthians 15:3
– “3 For we ourselves were also once foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving various lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful and hating one another. 4 But when the kindness and the love of God our Savior toward man appeared, 5 not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit, 6 whom He poured out on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Savior, 7 that having been justified by His grace we should become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.” – Titus 3:3-7
Our LORD and our Master is urging us this morning, not to weep for Him, and feel sad for His sufferings, even though they are every bit real, and excruciatingly painful. Instead, He is urging us to look deep into ourselves, our situation, our sins, the need for cleansing, our need for forgiveness and restoration. May we have the right focus this day, the Good Friday, as we meditate upon the Saviour, His Cross, and OUR SINS, because of which our LORD Jesus was nailed to the cross. Even so, the LORD help us.
"...Jesus was literally pierced, crushed, punished, and striped so that sinners could be forgiven, reconciled, and healed...He takes what we deserve; we receive what only He can give. The cross therefore stands as the central, sufficient, and loving act of God that brings peace now and perfect wholeness forever."
