Cooking is a fascinating subject of study. It throws much light on human relationships, and gives us the principles for a healthy and fulfilling life.
The Word of God also uses the language of cooking to drive home certain important points. Talking about a Christian, Paul writes in Colossians 4:6, that our speech should always be graceful, and appropriately seasoned with salt – “6 Let your speech be always with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man.”
Graceful is to be gentle, kind, merciful, magnanimous and soft. This is in no way being weak, helpless and useless.
Seasoning is an essential process in cooking. Watergate Bay Hotel describes seasoning this way – “It creates deep flavours and marries together different ingredients to create balanced, flavoursome food. Seasoning can be sweet, savoury, acid or bitter. Without it a dish can be bland. It’s probably the easiest way to create a great tasting meal.”
Let our speech be graceful and properly seasoned. Let our words lift people up, and not put them down. Even when required to speak a hard, difficult and uncomfortable point, let grace and love lead the way for us. So God help us.
"God spoke the universe into existence. Our words have the power to hurt or empower. Words matter to God, and He wants them to matter to us. It’s hard to always speak in love, but with God all things are possible!"
