Romans are known for their justice and fairness. Their law and their justice system is famed world over. Yet when it came to Jesus Christ of Nazareth, it not only failed to uphold its ideals, but as it played out, the whole judicial process became a sham, and a travesty of justice.
According to Lisbdnet, Romans law believed that, “An accused person was presumed innocent unless proven guilty.” The above principle is one of the top three pillars of the Roman law. Yet, it failed so miserably, and that to say, it is a travesty, is in itself a tragedy. If ever there was an innocent person, that would be Jesus. Yet, He was sent to the ‘gallows’ untried, and on false and framed up charges. A sad tragedy.
We see, another judicial process at play, when Jesus hung on the Cross at Calvary. It pleased the Father to send the Son to be the ransom for the lost and fallen world. Herein we see, the Creator hanging on the cross, because the justice of the Almighty demanded nothing less. Therefore, God Himself came down to pay the price for our redemption. HalleluYah!!!
“45 For even the Son of Man…[has come]…to give His life a ransom for many.” “23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, 25 whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God’s righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins.” – Mark 10:45, Romans 3:23-25
“Since, however, we ourselves cannot give this satisfaction or deliver ourselves from God’s anger, God in his boundless mercy has given us as a guarantee his only begotten Son, who was made to be sin and a curse for us, in our place, on the cross, in order that he might give satisfaction for us.” – Canons of Dort 2.2.
Our redemption has come at such an inestimable cost, and a cost we could never pay; knowing well, the LORD Himself, so willingly and happily came forward to stand as a ransom for our redemption, and satisfy the perfect justice of God. Therefore, let us live worthy of our Redeemer.
"Love was compressed for all history in that lonely figure on the cross, who said that he could call down angels at any moment on a rescue mission, but chose not to - because of us. At Calvary, God accepted his own unbreakable terms of justice."
