Thursday, in the Passion Week is called the Maundy Thursday. Maundy means “command” in Latin, and refers to Jesus’ commandment to the disciples, to “Love one another as I have loved you.” John 13:34.
The LORD displays His humility, His frailty and His obedience despite every conceivable obstacle and obstruction. He doesn’t falter or fail in His purpose of saving the sinful world by His personal sacrifice. What a life!
Jesus demonstrates to His disciples that He has come to serve, and not to be served, when He washes their feet. The Master washing the feet of His disciples. The Creator washing the feet of His rebellious, sinful and finite creation.
The LORD’s frailty and obedience is seen when He prays, “27 “Now My soul is troubled, and what shall I say? ‘Father, save Me from this hour’? But for this purpose I came to this hour. 28 Father, glorify Your name.” “39 He went a little farther and fell on His face, and prayed, saying, “O My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will.” – John 12:27-28, Matthew 26:39.
The betrayal and the ‘back stabbing’ of Jesus is painful to watch. Such heartlessness and such evilness is demonstrated with a ‘kiss.’ Oh the sinfulness of our hearts – “47 And while He was still speaking, behold, a multitude; and he who was called Judas, one of the twelve, went before them and drew near to Jesus to kiss Him. 48 But Jesus said to him, “Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?” – Luke 22:47-48.
The LORD shows us the way to walk. He walked on it Himself, and wants us to walk on it too. A path of humility and obedience in spite of our fallen human nature. Let us always pray – “…nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will.” – Matthew 26:39. Amen. So be it LORD!
"I have come to see clearly that life is more than self. It is more than doing what I want, striving for what will benefit me, dreaming of all I can be. Life is all about my relationship with God. There is no higher calling, no loftier dream, and no greater goal than to live, breathe, and be poured out for Jesus Christ."
