The Bible, which is the Word of God, exhorts us to pray for our nation and the leaders thereof. It is our responsibility. It is something that God wants us to. This is something that will please God our Creator, our Redeemer and our LORD.
“1 Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, 2 for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence. 3 For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour,” – 1 Timothy 2:1-3
The question is not whether the leadership is good or bad. The point to note, is that, we are exhorted to pray, and this is acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour. In Romans 13:1, the Bible says, “Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God.” In Colossians 1:16–17 the LORD says thus, “For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.”
Today is the Sunday before our Independence day. How many of our Church services will pray for the President, the Prime Minister, the Chief Minister and all the other ministers and the administrative officials? How many of our Churches will sing the national anthem? How many of our churches will hoist the flag on 15th August?
G.K. Chesterton says, “The Bible tells us to love our neighbours, and also to love our enemies: probably because they are generally the same people.” May the LORD help us to love our nation, our fellow citizens with all our heart; and pray sincerely for our leaders – good and bad – and love our neighbours and enemies. “For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour.”
"To love someone means to see him as God intended him."
