The LORD, speaking through the words of the writer of Proverbs 4, urges us to do something that would lead us to health and life. The following verses from the same chapter tell us about the heart of God towards us, the fallen human beings. Also, it reveals to us the secret of how one can get hold of a good life…a life well lived.
– “20 My son, give attention to my words; Incline your ear to my sayings. 21 Do not let them depart from your eyes; Keep them in the midst of your heart; 22 For they are life to those who find them, And health to all their flesh.” – Proverbs 4:20-22
If we pay attention to the words of the above verses, we see the LORD repeating one particular thing *four times* in the space if two small verses. This repetition signifies the importance that the LORD is placing on them, and the exertion and emphasis upon us to obey or follow the instructions of the LORD.
– “My son, GIVE ATTENTION to my words;”
– “INCLINE YOUR EAR to my sayings.”
– “DO NOT LET THEM DEPART from YOUR EYES;”
– “KEEP THEM in the MIDST of your HEART;”
The LORD would never ask us to do anything unless it has good in it for us. Unless it help us. Unless it blessed us. Unless it makes us better. Unless it guides us in the right path – a path that will lead us to a blessed “LIFE” and will shower us with wholesome “HEALTH” as conceived and intended by the good and gracious God of all creation.
– “22 For they are life to those who find them, And health to all their flesh.” – Proverbs 4:22
Nothing we ever desire for ourselves would even come closer to what the LORD wants for us. Here under are a few more Bible verses for our deeper understanding about the matter on hand. They help us see the truth of God’s heart to bless us with the best, and gives us the key to get it.
– “8 This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.” – Joshua 1:8
– “32 “Therefore you shall be careful to do as the LORD your God has commanded you; you shall not turn aside to the right hand or to the left. 33 You shall walk in all the ways which the LORD your God has commanded you, that you may live and that it may be well with you, and that you may prolong your days in the land which you shall possess.” – Deuteronomy 5:32-33
Dear brothers and sisters, the key to a blessed “LIFE” and a wholesome “HEALTH” is in paying heed to all what the LORD is saying; and wholeheartedly doing all what the LORD Jesus is asking of us. The key is found in our FAITH in the LORD Jesus, and our OBEDIENCE to the LORD our Redeemer. Even so, the LORD help us.
"To "incline your ear" suggests a deliberate and intentional effort to listen closely and understand. This phrase implies humility and a willingness to be taught, which is a recurring theme in Proverbs. The act of inclining one's ear is also a metaphor for obedience and submission to God's wisdom, as seen in Isaiah 55:3, where God invites His people to listen so that their souls may live."
