Who doesn’t want to be happy? Of course, everyone wants to be happy. Some try to find happiness in money, some others in achieving something, or in attaining status and power. Some purse intellectual avenues to find happiness. Strangely, nothing seems to fill that void in our hearts, which craves for happiness. Pursuit of money, power, position and pleasure doesn’t seem to help man to be happy. A glance around would suffice to arrive at this conclusion.
As we observe life around us, we will see people who appear happy, while pursuing money, power, position and pleasure. True, people will be happy in getting the above things. The flip side is what most of us miss. The happiness, nay the ‘high’ that they derive, is but temporal…fleetingly temporal. For as long as they have those things, which they deem to give them happiness, they are happy. But as soon as they get used to that happiness, their desire to have more of it, takes over, and then, they are back to square one – unhappy, and wish to pursue it more vigorously. This cycle is unending. Sadly, many a man had destroyed himself in pursuit of happiness.
Alexander the Great, when he was about to die, at a very young age, early thirties, requested three things from this generals, upon his death.
1- To put his arms out in the open, for everyone to see, instead of, inside the coffin.
2- To display his wealth, for everyone to see, as his funeral procession moves.
3- Only his physicians should carry his coffin.
Alexander explained the reason for these three unusual requests.
1- “I wish everyone to know, that I came into this world, empty-handed, and I am going empty-handed.”
2- “I spent all my life earning riches, but cannot take any of my riches with me. I want everyone to know that, wealth has no value, it is but dust.”
3- “I want my physicians to carry my coffin because, people should realise that, no doctor can cure anybody. Everyone is helpless in front of death.”
What a way to tell the world that power, wealth and doctors cannot help us.
True happiness is found only in God our Creator. The Bible says…“20 He who heeds the word wisely will find good, And whoever trusts in the LORD, happy is he.” “15…Happy are the people whose God is the LORD!” – Proverbs 16:20; Psalms 144:15b
What are you searching for in life? Are you seeking for lasting happiness? Look no further. Read what Jesus said – “33 But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.” – Matthew 6:33
“6 Now godliness with contentment is great gain.” – 1 Timothy 6:6-10
"Whenever you put happiness before righteousness, you will be doomed to misery. That is the great message of the Bible from beginning to end. They alone are truly happy who are seeking to be righteous."
