The love that God demonstrates towards the fallen world, and the rebellious human race is, simply beyond our grasp to understand. The love that God has for us is abiding, enduring and unfailing love. There isn’t a word to define it, in all its grandeur. There is no language yet, with depth enough, to describe and explain this love, that God demonstrates towards us.
David, the shepherd king, attempts the impossible, knowing fully well that, it is beyond anyone’s capacity, to define and describe the eternal, abiding and immeasurable love of God, towards the fallen world. Let us look at Psalm 36:5-6.
– “5 Your steadfast love, O LORD, extends to the heavens, your faithfulness to the clouds. 6 Your righteousness is like the mountains of God; your judgments are like the great deep; man and beast you save, O LORD.” – Psalm 36:5-6
David, who himself had experienced, God’s immeasurable love in his life, does a very good job of writing about the LORD’s love. As he puts it, God’s love is STEADFAST and FAITHFUL – indicating that it is “unchanging,” therefore, “immeasurable.” The love that God demonstrates is a reflection of His character. It indicates the virtue that God has in Himself. Bible scholars describe this love, as the covenantal love, that is visible all through the Bible, especially in the Old Testament. Berean Study Bible notes says this…
– “The term…often translated as “steadfast love”…[is] derived from the Hebrew word “chesed,” which signifies a covenantal love that is loyal and enduring. This concept is central to the character of God…”
To understand this in its proper context, we need to read a couple of verses from the Bible…
– “19 God is not man, that he should lie, or a son of man, that he should change his mind. Has he said, and will he not do it? Or has he spoken, and will he not fulfill it?” – Numbers 23:19
– “6 “For I the LORD do not change; therefore you, O children of Jacob, are not consumed.” – Malachi 3:6
– “33 but I will not remove from him my steadfast love or be false to my faithfulness. 34 I will not violate my covenant or alter the word that went forth from my lips. 35 Once for all I have sworn by my holiness; I will not lie to David…37 Like the moon it shall be established forever, a faithful witness in the skies.” Selah” – Psalm 89:33-35,37
May the love of our LORD, that He demonstrates towards us, help us to trust Him deeper, and help us to totally depend upon Him, for all our needs. For the LORD our God is trustworthy, and His love is STEADFAST and FAITHFUL. May this fact that, God doesn’t change, and that His love is abiding forever, unlike human beings, help us to love, seek, trust and obey Him, always. Even so the LORD help us.
"God's loving devotion (Hebrew: "chesed") is a steadfast, covenantal love that is unwavering and eternal. It is not based on our actions but on His character. Just as the heavens and clouds are beyond human reach, so is God's faithfulness beyond our full comprehension. It is constant and reliable. In times of uncertainty, believers can find comfort in the unchanging nature of God's love and faithfulness. This trust should lead to a life of worship and obedience."
