David, writing in Psalm 5 says something they should stop us in our thoughts about God our Creator and Redeemer and our worship of Him, as we go to our respective Churches this day. What gives us that right to enter into God’s presence? David answers this in verse seven.
– “7 But as for me, I will come into Your house in the multitude of Your mercy; In fear of You I will worship toward Your holy temple.” – Psalm 5:7
Our entry into God’s presence is solely on the basis of His mercy. This is very clearly understood and recognised by David. There is no other means by which we can claim our entrance into the presence of God Almighty, but in the multitude of His mercies.
– “Were it not for the grace of God there would be no such thing as a Christian.” – D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones
– Mercy is required and requested by all who woefully fall short of the basic required standard.
– Mercy and its need in our lives should remind us that we cannot make any efforts on our own to change our status.
– Mercy and its request is a declaration we are in an utterly hopeless situation.
The mercy that God shows towards us is made tangible in three distinct dimensions. The mercy of God is seen through His Unconditional Love, His Unceasing Grace, and His Unmerited Forgiveness. It is a continuous flow of God’s love, grace and forgiveness, that makes us worthy to enter into the presence of God. The LORD Jesus through His sinless sacrifice on the Cross of Calvary has paved the way for us.
– “3 If You, LORD, should mark iniquities, O Lord, who could stand?” – Psalm 130:3
– “4 But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, 5 even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved),” – Ephesians 2:4–5
– “14 Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. 15 For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. 16 Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” – Hebrews 4:14-16
– “19 Therefore, brethren, having boldness to enter the Holiest by the blood of Jesus, 20 by a new and living way which He consecrated for us, through the veil, that is, His flesh, 21 and having a High Priest over the house of God, 22 let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water.” – Hebrews 10:19-23
What are our thoughts this morning, as we prepare to go to the Church. How do we view ourselves? What attitude is it that is driving us as we prepare to worship our great and mighty God collectively, with our fellow Christian brothers and sisters? May the LORD Jesus help us to be properly grounded in our attitude and our approach. May the LORD enable us to see the truth about ourselves and about the mercies of God – “…I will come into Your house in the multitude of Your mercy…” Even so, the LORD Jesus help us.
"Mercy is God's favour that holds back from us what we deserve. Grace is God's favour that gives us what we do not deserve."
