Word of God is the spring of never ending wisdom, inspiration, encouragement and strength for a Christian. This is precisely why, the LORD had given us, the Bible for. For the past two days, we are meditating on, Philippians 1:6. Let us see, what more can we gain from this verse, for our Christian walk.
– “6 Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ.” – Philippians 1:6
As we walk this journey, as a Christian, many times, we lose track of the foundational principles, that help us to be on that track. Hence, we need to, from time to time, pause and ponder, to get our spiritual perspective, on the foundational Christian principles recalibrated, and fine-tuned, for a vibrant Christian life. I think, we need to remind ourselves, as often as possible, what Paul says in the above verse. Such an exercise, helps us to stay focussed, and to stand firm, as we walk on this path, that we are called to. The above verse has three lessons for us, in this regard.
1- BEING CONFIDENT OF THIS VERY THING
Our confidence, as a Christian, is because of who God is, and His immutable character. Whatever He has promised us, He will for a certainty, bring it to completion. This is who the God of the Bible is, utterly DEPENDABLE and absolutely TRUSTWORTHY.
– “St. Paul’s thanksgiving [in Philippians 1:6] refers, not only to the past, but also to the future. He has a confident trustfulness in God’s power and love.” – Donald Spence Jones
2- HE WHICH HATH BEGUN A GOOD WORK IN YOU
Let us never ever forget that, the work of redemption, and the work of transformation in us, is the work begun by God, and not, we ourselves. There can no confidence be placed, in human flesh, our intelligence, and our abilities. They are but of no value, when it comes to redeem and transform us. Simply put, our flesh can never ever transform us. God begins the work of transformation, and it is He, who will bring it to completion.
– “The good work is God’s; he began it and he will perfect it. The beginning (Bengel) is the pledge of the consummation.” – Donald Spence Jones
3- HE WILL PERFORM IT UNTIL THE DAY OF JESUS CHRIST
The process of transformation, or sanctification, is a long drawn out process. It goes on till the day, we are called by our LORD to our eternal home; or till the LORD returns – whichever is earlier. The One who has called us out of darkness, into His marvellous light, is the One, who will complete this process of transformation or sanctification. Whatever is required, for such an end, will be the responsibility of the LORD. We are, on our part, called to trust Him – place our faith in Him – and walk in cheerful obedience to Him, and in all His words. This is a lifelong process, and not a one-time event.
– “The perfecting will go on until the great day. To the individual Christian that…[day]…is practically the day of his death; though, indeed, the process of perfecting may be going on in the holy dead till they obtain their perfect consummation and bliss both in body and soul.” – Donald Spence Jones
Let us read a few more Scripture portions, to help us gain, a deeper and a clearer insight, into the process of transformation, which our LORD is doing, in our lives.
– “24 He who calls you is faithful; he will surely do it.” – 1 Thessalonians 5:24
– “7…our Lord Jesus Christ, 8 who will sustain you to the end, guiltless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 God is faithful, by whom you were called into the fellowship of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.” – 1 Corinthians 1:7-9
– “12…But I am not ashamed, for I know whom I have believed, and I am convinced that he is able to guard until that day what has been entrusted to me.” – 2 Timothy 1:12
THE LORD IS ABSOLUTELY FAITHFUL, therefore, let us TRUST HIM WITH ALL OUR HEART – even so, the LORD help us.
"The work of grace will never be perfected till the day of Jesus Christ, the day of his appearance. But we may always be confident God will perform his good work, in every soul wherein he has really begun it by regeneration; though we must not trust in outward appearances, nor in any thing but a new creation to holiness."
