Moses, at the very end of his life, and as the Hebrew children were about to enter into the promised land, speaks all what is in his heart in the form of a song. We find this, “THE SONG OF MOSES” in Deuteronomy 31:30-32:47. To get the context and Moses’ thoughts about the Hebrew children, we can read Deuteronomy 31:24-29.
For our meditation this morning, let us look at Deuteronomy 32:1-4.
– “1 “Give ear, O heavens, and I will speak; And hear, O earth, the words of my mouth. 2 Let my teaching drop as the rain, My speech distill as the dew, As raindrops on the tender herb, And as showers on the grass.” – Deuteronomy 32:1-2
– “3 For I proclaim the name of the LORD: Ascribe greatness to our God. 4 He is the Rock, His work is perfect; For all His ways are justice, A God of truth and without injustice; Righteous and upright is He.” – Deuteronomy 32:3-4
The heart of Moses’ song is found in verses 3-4. Understanding the words which Moses speaks in these two verses is very important to know who our God is, and how He thinks, and what is important to Him. *When we get to know who God is, and what is important to Him, then we will know the character of God, His nature and His heart.* In simple words, we will know the LORD God Almighty.
1- “ASCRIBE GREATNESS TO OUR GOD”
Let us learn to give to God our praise, our worship and our everything, which He so rightly deserves. He is great…He alone is great.
– “This call to ascribe greatness is an invitation to recognize and declare God’s supreme power and majesty…Moses’ call to ascribe greatness is a timeless reminder for believers to honor God in all aspects of life, acknowledging His rightful place as Lord over all creation.” – Berean Study Bible Notes
2- “HE IS THE ROCK”
God is the “ROCK” – the firm foundation to everything in this world, and to everything in our personal world. It speaks about the character of God. It not only speaks of God’s strength and firmness in all His thoughts, words and deeds; much more than that, it speaks about His immutability, and His ability to remain the same yesterday, today and forever. “HE IS THE ROCK.”
3- “HIS WORK IS PERFECT”
The creation account reveals to us about God’s quality of work and His perfectness. Anything and everything that God does is perfect. There is no flaw in it; the work is never incomplete; it is not shoddy, nor does it need some more effort, in the future, to fine-tune it. Whenever God does something, it is absolutely perfect. It does not need any upgradation or any future adaptations. HIS WORK IS PERFECT.
4- “FOR ALL HIS WAYS ARE JUSTICE”
We find God to be the epitome of justice. In Him there are no double standards. The LORD our God is absolutely just, fair and equitable in all His thoughts, words and deeds. There is none higher that the LORD, “FOR ALL HIS WAYS ARE JUSTICE”
5- “A GOD OF TRUTH”
God is truth. In Him there is no lie. All what He thinks, speaks and does is truth in all its fullness.
– Truth is powerful. Truth is sharper than any sharpest sword. It cuts everything. It reveals every lie. It illuminates every dark corner. It empowers the one who upholds it. It emboldens all who love it. It defines and defends all who abide by it.
Truth is not every man’s cup of tea. To be truthful in our lives, we have to know the God of truth, and love Him – the TRUTH – with all our heart; love Him much more than our very lives. When we are willing to lay down even our life for the sake of TRUTH, then we begin to truly worship God. He surely is “A GOD OF TRUTH.”
6- “WITHOUT INJUSTICE”
The LORD God our Creator is Someone in whom there is no dark spot at all. One would never find our LORD unjust. For He is “WITHOUT INJUSTICE” in all His ways. What may appear to us as injustice, in the present, we would surely realise latter, how wrong we were.
When God our LORD is faithful, there would be no scope for any injustice in all His dealings. What may, for the present appear as unjust and unfair, would later be revealed to us that, God is always fair, just and equitable… absolutely. Our God is “WITHOUT INJUSTICE” in Him and in all His dealings.
7- “RIGHTEOUS AND UPRIGHT IS HE”
God of the Bible, when we read His dealings with the humans, we get to know very early that, “RIGHTEOUS AND UPRIGHT IS HE” undoubtedly.
– “Righteousness and uprightness are attributes that describe God’s moral purity and ethical standards. These qualities are foundational to His character and are reflected in His laws and commandments.” – Berean Study Bible Notes
Do we know who our God is? Moses reveals to us the nature and character of God. The LORD God Almighty, our Redeemer is beyond human comprehension. It is difficult to grasp the glory and wonder of who God is. We find it difficult to grasp the goodness and the greatness of our God, even from whatever little is revealed to us. May we be ever in awe of our LORD.
"[Moses] ...stacks one declaration upon another so we never forget who our God is: the immovable Rock, flawless in His works, always just, ever faithful, utterly without injustice, forever righteous and upright. Trusting a God like that is not a leap in the dark—it is standing on the surest ground in the universe."
