Life of a Christian disciple is uncomplicated. This is how I see it, when I read the Bible, which is the written Word of God. Right from the day YAHWEH, the LORD God Almighty, delivered the Hebrew children from Egypt, till the times of Jesus, and the writing of the gospels and the epistles, we see only this being asked by God from us – TRUST and OBEY. Just like the, refrain of the beautiful English hymn, which says…
– “Trust and obey, for there’s no other way, To be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey.”
Now let us read Psalm 62:5-8, and seek the LORD to help us understand what is it that He wants us to learn from this passage.
– “5 My soul, wait thou only upon God; for my expectation is from him. 6 He only is my rock and my salvation: he is my defence; I shall not be moved. 7 In God is my salvation and my glory: the rock of my strength, and my refuge, is in God. 8 Trust in him at all times; ye people, pour out your heart before him: God is a refuge for us. Selah.” – Psalm 62:5-8
As part of our last meditation on this passage, let us read verse eight again…
– “8 Trust in him at all times; ye people, pour out your heart before him: God is a refuge for us. Selah.”
There are three things that God wants us to learn through the words of David, His servant. 1- TRUST IN HIM AT ALL TIMES. 2- POUR OUT OUR HEART BEFORE HIM. 3- GOD IS A REFUGE FOR US.
1- TRUST IN HIM AT ALL TIMES
Placing our TRUST in someone speaks about the other person’s ABILITY to help us, in our need, and also our confidence in that person’s ABILITY. If we were to trust someone AT ALL TIMES, it means that Person is simply and absolutely TRUSTWORTHY. God of the Bible is the only One, who is truly trustworthy. He has proved to us, time and again that, we can place our TRUST IN HIM AT ALL TIMES. Who else can vouch better, than David?
2- POUR OUT YOUR HEART BEFORE HIM
David encourages others, through his personal experience, to “POUR OUT OUR HEART BEFORE HIM” the LORD God of all creation, “AT ALL TIMES.” This invitation from David, indicates unambiguously, about God’s ability to understand us and our situation, and that He will certainly stand with us, in times of our need.
3- GOD IS A REFUGE FOR US
Lastly David exhorts the believer to realise that “GOD IS A REFUGE FOR US” – a refuge so safe and secure, that we can and should run to Him,, at all times, and pour out our hearts before Him. Who could be a better refuge for us, than the LORD God Almighty, who is Omniscient, Omnipotent and Omnipresent, the One to whom there is no beginning nor an end, in fact, He Himself is the beginning and the end – the Alpha and the Omega of all things.
May we never forget anyone of these personal insights from David, when running through rough waters. It is easy to forget who God is, when in the midst of a storm. But, that is precisely when, we should be remembering, more than ever, who God is, and must be reflecting on His ability, to keep us safe, through it all. Such a reflection should lead us to trust Him, and enable us to step out in faith, despite all the raging waters, and the rising tides. Even so, the LORD help us.
"We must so trust in him at all times, as not at any time to put that trust in ourselves, or in any creature, which is to be put in him only. Trust in him to guide us when in doubt, to protect us when in danger, to supply us when in want, to strengthen us for every good word and work. We must lay out wants and our wishes before him, and then patiently submit our wills to his: this is pouring out our hearts. God is a refuge for all, even for as many as will take shelter in him."
