“What we sow is what we reap” is an old English proverb. It tells us very clearly that, we can very well make our own choices; however, we cannot choose their consequences. We will have to bear the consequences for the choices we made – “What we sow is what we reap.”
The Bible speaks clearly and precisely about this in Psalm 63:12. The Word of God is reminding us this – *BEWARE – WE REAP WHAT WE SOW* – remember that *GOD is the One who REWARDS OUR WORK.* There is no escape from it.
– “12 Also to You, O Lord, belongs mercy; For You render to each one according to his work.” – Psalm 63:12.
Two things are mentioned in the above verse.
– TO THE LORD, BELONGS MERCY
– THE LORD WILL RENDER TO EACH ONE ACCORDING TO THEIR WORK
Firstly – God’s MERCY comes into play because there is a situation that is punishable. We don’t deserve mercy, but God gives it to us, when we repent of our sin, and seek for forgiveness. Here under is a fine example of God’s mercy.
– “23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” – Romans 6:23
Secondly – God will bring everything and anything that we have ever thought, spoke or have done, into account, and they will be fairly and justly judged. This is for sure. There is no escape from it.
– “14 For God will bring every work into judgment, Including every secret thing, Whether good or evil.” – Ecclesiastes 12:14
Man in general, especially the rich and the powerful think, they can do whatever they want, but not face any consequences for their choices. Those who use violence to oppress; those who cleverly and cunningly rob others of their possessions; those who wantonly run after riches, and greedily and possessively hoard possessions, will be called to account by God, along with every other person. We may not recognise God as the One who holds such power, but will one day have to stand before Him, and given an account to Him, undoubtedly. We will have to pay the cost for all what we thought, spoke and have done.
– “27 For the Son of Man will come in the glory of His Father with His angels, and then He will reward each according to his works.” – Matthew 16:27
– “12 “And behold, I am coming quickly, and My reward is with Me, to give to every one according to his work.” – Revelation 22:12
– “12 If you say, “Surely we did not know this,” Does not He who weighs the hearts consider it? He who keeps your soul, does He not know it? And will He not render to each man according to his deeds?” – Proverbs 24:12
– “9 “The heart is deceitful above all things, And desperately wicked; Who can know it? 10 I, the LORD, search the heart, I test the mind, Even to give every man according to his ways, According to the fruit of his doings.” – Jeremiah 17:9-10
May we be aware that there are consequences to every choice we make. May we realise that, God the Judge of the whole world will call us to account one day. May we know that the LORD is merciful too. Therefore, let us run to Him as quickly as possible with repentive hearts, and ask for forgiveness wholeheartedly, and set our lives right with God, by His mercy and grace. Even so, the LORD help us.
"[The LORD]...holds two inseparable truths: God’s unfailing love comforts and secures His people, while His perfect justice guarantees that every deed will meet its rightful response. Together they invite us to trust His heart and align our lives with His standards, resting in grace yet walking in holy accountability."
